Farm Market Beginnings...
“Strong communities are built around local, real food. Food we trust to nourish our bodies, the farmer and planet.”
– Kimbal Musk
Originated in 1963 by the Matthew's family, Bennett's Creek Farm Market has been a long time tradition in Suffolk, Virginia. The Matthews' family farm was a true farm in every sense of the word, embodying the hard work and grit it takes to run a farm. Jodie Matthews, now general manager of Bennett's Creek Farm Market remembers it well. " We had everything on that farm. Dairy cattle, hogs, chickens, peach and apple orchards; it was hard work. From the time I was a young child, I worked the farm every day of the week. It instilled in me the work ethic that I have today. The farm was a special place...hard work, but special." You can find Jodie side by side with current owners Jim and Martha Shirley working daily at the farm market, carrying on the traditions of his family.
Jim and Martha Shirley purchased the farm in 1997 as a real estate investment with hopes that the land would appreciate in value as the city of Suffolk continued to grow. As it turned out, they were urged by friends to give the market a chance and keep it open. It was a gamble they are glad they decided to take. Since 1997, Bennett's Creek Farm Market has been serving locals and visitors alike specializing in fresh local seafood, meats, and produce, good ol' fashioned home cooking with a flare...three squares a day, deli items, local Virginia products, prepackaged meals, fine wines and beer, grocery staples, and so much more. Bennett's Creek Farm Market is your one stop shop for everything local and fresh in Suffolk, Va.
